In collaboration with the nuclear fusion research group, NAMRG scientists have received a patent entitled “Cold-Sprayed Tantalum Coatings and Related Methods”, U.S. Patent No. 12709806 (2026). ). In addition to the inherent benefit of the high melting point of tantalum, the coatings can absorb notably high levels hydrogen due to its unique microstructure. The trapped hydrogen can be expelled by heating to higher temperatures to regenerate the coating material. The coating has potential applications in fusion technology for plasma facing reactor walls. Tantalum is also well-known for its outstanding corrosion resistance. The groups have also received publications in journals, Physica Scripta and Nuclear Fusion for this research
